McNamara Maxes out the Win in Angola Legends
By: Dave DeHem
Max McNamara took maximum advantage and took the win in the US Legends Cars International National Qualifier held this past holiday weekend by the Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Michigan Legends Car Series presented by Z-Max Lubricants and Angola Speedway in Angola, Indiana.
McNamara now has a guaranteed provisional starting spot for the Asphalt Nationals to be held later this year by virtue of his main event win in the National Qualifier race. Before McNamara of Ingleside, Illinois could grab his fourth win in a row He would have to get through the heat races and vie for his starting spot in the 30 lap main event.
Heat race number one went to longtime competitor and now current point's leader, Levi Rouster over Matt Todd, and Andrea Hans. Defending Series Champion, Brandon Mahoney would grab the second heat victory over Adam Van Cleave, and McNamara. Sean McPherson made a fine showing by holding off Tyler Rycenga for the win in heat race three with Ben Rouster finishing off in the third spot.
Sixteen cars answered the call of the green flag in the 30 lap feature with Levi Rouster leading much of the race only to have a late race caution bunch the field up and ending up finishing second to McNamara. Third place runner Tony Monge broke an axle with 2 laps to go and was relegated to a 15th place finish costing him the points lead to Rouster by 9 points. Monge has held the points lead for much of the 2010 campaign and will now have to keep Rouster in his sights the remainder of the year if he is to steal the lead back again. Brandon Mahoney, Tyler Rycenga, and Cody Mahoney rounded out the top five while Sean McPherson, Ben Rouster, Nick Grodi, John Turnbull Jr., and Adam VanCleave completed the top ten.
The Auto value/Bumper to Bumper Michigan Legends Series presented by Z-Max Lubricants now heads off into a double header weekend July 9th & 10th with its first stop of the year at the Spartan Speedway in Mason, Michigan, just outside of the state capital of Lansing for a full program of Hot Laps, heat races, and a 30 lap feature event. The very next night the series heads over to nearby Ovid for its second and final run of the year at the historic Owosso Speedway. The two tracks couldn't be more different with Spartan being a tight, semi banked quarter mile and Owosso being a wide, progressively, high banked 3/8 mile oval.
Nevertheless, each track has produced many racing stars over the years and each one is especially racy so come on out to these two great speedways and see if Tony Monge can wrestle the points lead away from Levi Rouster or if Tyler “The Red Rocket” can repeat his feat of last August and grab the win at Spartan or if the Rookie Sensation, Loren Short can make it two for two at Owosso this year. Whatever choice you make, The Michigan Legends Series will keep you on the edge of your seat and your head in the race.
